Weekend Plus Desk :
Let’s be honest – periods are messy. Upset stomach, bloating, fatigue, cramps and headache during the monthly menstrual cycle can at times be too much to handle. All you want during that time of the month is to stay in your bed and enjoy a warm cup of coffee.
Most women skip physical activity during this time. But periods should not be an excuse to take a break from your workout routine. In fact, staying physically active may help to reduce the annoying symptoms of periods. Performing high-intensity exercises may become a little challenging, but there some other alternatives that you can consider trying for your own good.
Before periods
The symptoms of periods start to appear a week in advance. Women tend to get more tired, irritable and find it really difficult to gather the strength to go to the gym. During this time you can slow down a little and rather than performing an intense cardio workout, opt for low-intensity exercises like Pilates or running.
During periods
Periods should not stop you from doing anything, that includes staying physically active. You may feel a little low and suffer from cramps, but it is still a good idea to engage in some kind of physical activity. Just try to be a little gentle and do not push your body.
Exercises to avoid
Do not perform HIIT and belly exercises when menstruating. These exercises put extra stress on your belly, which you would not want when so much is happening in your reproductive system. Try to keep things light.
Exercises you can do
Walking or running
Walking is a gentle and low intensity workout. If you do not want to do anything hardcore then just go for a small walk outdoor. This will help to uplift your mood and you will be able to burn some calories. If you are done with your period cramps then you can also go for running.
Pilates
Pilates targets specific muscle groups and can help during periods. You can tweak the exercises as per your need and physical condition. In case you are suffering from lower back issue, then some specific pilates move can help to provide relief from pain.
Yoga
Yoga is a combination of stretching and breathing exercises, which can be beneficial during the monthly menstrual cycle. Certain yoga poses help to increase blood circulation in the body and provide ease from the nasty symptoms of the period.
Dancing
Dancing is a fun activity, which can also help you to stay fit. To move your body during periods, you can also dance. It can also help to cheer you up.
