S.A Shofiee, Sylhet :Flower Business man of Sylhet Sylhet city say they are now passing a very busy time right before the arrival of spring and the celebration of the Valentines Day.Demand for flowers, mostly in the cities, rise sharply during these occasions, and a large part of this demand is met by flower Business man in Sylhet. Hafiz Uddin, a Business man of Zindabazar said, a big garland of marigold was sold at Tk 120-140 a few months ago, but now, these are sold at Tk 180-200. He said that flower prices have marked a high this season, bringing more profit to the farmers.General Secretary of Sylhet Sylhet city flower association Jamir Uddin told that he has grown marigold flower in 20 bighas of land in this season.While it is a very profitable business in this area, they incurred losses during political unrest a few days ago. Farmers with their wife and other family members are now plucking flowers and making garlands as there is a huge demand for flowers right now, he said. At least 5,000 people in this area are engaged in flower business, Jamir said. These include farmers, day labourers, seasonal flower businessmen that include a large number of poor and distressed women.
