The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court fixed 28 May for giving an order on a leave-to-appeal filed by BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia challenging a High Court order that scrapped her appeal seeking cancellation of the proceedings of the Barapukuria coalmine graft case.
A four-member Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, heard the leave-to-appeal petition and the hearing was completed on Monday.
Earlier, on September 17, 2016, the High Court
rejected the BNP Chairperson’s appeal that sought scrapping Barapukuria graft case.
Following the HC order, Khaleda Zia in last year, filed the leave-to-appeal with the Appellate Division.
Senior lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali along with Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon and advocate M Badruduzza Badal stood for the BNP Chairperson, while Khurshid Alam Khan represented the ACC during the hearing.
The ACC filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station on February 26, 2008, accusing Khaleda Zia and 10 of her former cabinet colleagues of taking Tk 1.59 billion in kickbacks on the Barapukuria coalmine deal awarded to the highest bidder, instead of the lowest one.
