BNP on Saturday alleged that the officials of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) are trying to influence the upazila election to Pirganj of Rangpur.
“The election to Pirganj upazila will be held on Monday. Some officials of the Prime Minister’s Office are staying there to exert influence as a Prime Minister’s relative is contesting the polls for the chairman post,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
The BNP leader brought the allegation at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
Rizvi said, the PMO officials are also violating the electoral code of conduct by providing development allocation from different funds to influence the polls.
Chaidat Hossain Bokul, the nephew of the Prime Minister’s brother-in-law (Wazed Mia’s elder brother) Abdul Khalek Mia, is vying for the post of chairman in Pirganj upazila as a ruling party-supported candidate.
Rizvi alleged that the government is increasing the degree of its repression and oppression on the opposition and killing and making them disappeared as it got desperate after the debacle of the ruling party runners in the first phase of the upazila polls.
He claimed that the government could not resist the victory of the 19-party backed candidates despite the assistance of its puppet Election Commission and the administration. “We believe 95 percent BNP-backed candidates could win in the first phase of the upazila polls had those been fair.”
