UNB, Dhaka :
The government has taken an initiative to set up 900 additional digital labs and classrooms in educational institutions across the country with funds left over from an ICT Division project.
Under the project titled ‘Establishment of Computer and Language Training Labs in Educational Institutions’, a total of 2001 computer labs, including 65 language training ones, have already been set up in high schools and madrasahs across the country, an official at the ICT Division said. The computer labs titled ‘Sheikh Russell Digital Lab’ and ‘Sheikh Russell Digital Language Training Lab’ were named after Sheikh Russell, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
As a big portion of the allocated project fund remains unused, the ICT division has recently undertaken a plan to establish another 800 digital labs and 100 digital classrooms under the project involving Tk 298.98 crore, the official added. As part of the plan, he said, the ICT Division has already taken an initiative
to set up 100 Sheikh Russell digital classrooms in primary schools on pilot basis.
With the additional 900 labs, according to him, the number of digital labs and classrooms will go up to 2,901 instead of 2,000, at no additional cost. The government approved the project in December 2014 to set up the digital labs in educational institutions across the country from January 2015 to December 2016.
Of the 2,001 computer digital labs, 544 labs were set up in Dhaka division, 387 in Chittagong, 228 in Khulna, 295 in Rajshahi, 218 in Rangpur, 183 in Barisal and 146 in Sylhet Division under the project, being implemented with government funds. The students will gain digital literacy in the computer labs, having the scope to develop themselves as ‘the digital generation’ from their early schooling.
Every district got at least one digital language training lab where students can learn nine languages-English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic and Chinese. To run the language labs, some 1,000 teachers are being trained up to teach the nine languages. Language training software is being supplied to the labs, the official said.
