Over 10,000 tonnes cotton seed production expected in Jhenaidah

When the farmers in six upazilas of Jhenaidah were disheartened with the least production of wheat and mastered, they witnessed a ray of hope before them as they started harvesting good production of the seed cotton in the current season.
They have been expecting over 10 thousand tons of cotton seed in 21 unit offices of Jhenaidah, Magura and part of Faridpur districts ignoring the damage by excessive rainfall and depression in late October this year.
Hybrid Ruplai and Bangladesh Cotton Development Board (CDB) invented CB 14 variety of cotton seeds have ensured the yield for the cotton farmers in the district, said the farmers in the district.
Farmer Azizur Rahman of Raghunandanpur village of Hatfazilpur CDB unit in Jhenaidah said, he brought a total of 33 decimals of land under cotton farming in the season. He is expecting at least 12 maunds (each 40 kilograms) of seed cotton for an amount of Taka 26 to 27 thousand where the net profit might be at least Taka 19 thousand excluding seeds, fertilizer, irrigation, management and other costs in the season.
Farmer Bazlur Rahman of the village said, he brought his 46 decimals of land under cotton farming in the season. The farmers were offered Taka 2,240 for each maund of seed cotton as against past season’s Taka 2,100. It has encouraged the farmers in cotton farming in the season, he said.
The farmer said, they were discouraged when the officials of the department of agriculture extension have discouraged them not to cultivate wheat in the winter apprehending the blast attack like in places throughout the country. Further, the farmer said, farming of mastered was hampered due to excessive rainfall during the time.
 According to the farmer, farming of cotton in the area has become a profitable crop as it ensures better price and yield as well.
Chief Cotton Development Officer (CCDO) of the CDB in Jhenaidah zone Enamul Kabir said, the farmers of Jhenaidah Sadar, Hatfazilpur, Sailkupa, Seikhpara, Chandpur, Dakbangla, Kotchandpur, Bidyadharpur, Safderpur, Napa, Gobindapur, Moheshpur, Zinnanagar, Shyamkur, and Gurdah units in Jhenaidah district and Ichhakhada, Alokdia, Sripur and Langalbandh units in Magura and Madhukhali unit of Faridpur brought a total of 4,050 hectares of land as against the CDB target for 4,100 hectares in the current season.
The production of seed cotton on the zone was estimated for 10,125 tones at the rate of 2.60 tones on each hectare.
The CCDO said, the soil of Jhenaidah zone was is suitable for cotton farming. Further, the farmers in the area were aware in profitable crop farming. Hybrid Ruplai and CB 14 variety of seeds have ensured the yield for the cotton farmers in the district. No other crop would ensure much money like cotton, he added.
