Our social conscience must be aroused against godfathers

Besides the culture of impunity, shelters by the ruling party’s high-ranking leaders are the main causes behind the repeated incidents of rape, extortion, snatching, killing and looting across the country. For this, along with the criminals their godfathers must also be exposed for severe punishment. The demonstrators in Sylhet and other places continuing to express their protest for the last four days but the government is unable or unwilling to control their protected criminals. Because the government needs them for keeping the people terrorised.
The gang-rape incident of a newly married woman in front of her husband at the MC College hostel in Sylhet on Friday evening was too daring and too heinous that shook the conscience of the nation. They must be punished but demanding punishment is not the solution, unless their protectors can be held liable.
The drugs business has become a good business for all. The drugs are contributing to the young ones to be dangerous criminal. We want to know if these boys were not connected with drug lords and themselves usurers of drugs. We cannot ignore the fact of criminalisation of politics and expect crime free safe living.
The law enforcers showed efficiency in quickly arresting the leader of the gang rape and some others. One reason may be that the criminals were known previously for their criminal activities as student leaders of the government party. And they were enjoying protection. Such politically backed criminals are to be found in every corner of the country. The people are hostage of their crimes. Cruel rapes and gang rapes are not new. The stories of brides lifted from the marriage ceremony are also heard. Unemployed young ones join government politics to make money as criminals
It is nothing new or unknown that government may not be efficient but its criminal gangs as so called students are very organised and efficient. They are made criminals for the illegal politics of the government. It is the government that is directly responsible for them to become dangerous criminals.
Meanwhile, the High Court on Tuesday formed a three-member committee to conduct an inquiry into the incident of the gang rape of the woman at MC College in Sylhet. It also directed the committee, headed by the judge of Nari O Shishu Nirjatan Tribunal of Sylhet, to record statements from all concerned of the incident if it feels necessary and submit its report to this court in 15 days. The court’s anxiety is appreciated.
But our strong view is that the court’s punishment alone is not the remedy. We need our collective social conscience to be aroused against the highly placed people not doing their duty to make our lives and honour safe and protected.
The victims crying loud for help but people did not come to help in the sure belief that they are government protected and armed.
