Police have detained a man in Tangail for suspected involvement in the murder of former Power Development Board chairman Muhammad Khizir Khan at his Dhaka home.
The suspect Tarikul Islam Tarek, 23, was held on Tuesday night from Tangail’s Delduar Upazila, said local police. “A DB (Detective Branch) team from Dhaka detained him from the Upazila’s Moulaviparha,” Delduar police OC Mosharraf Hossain told bdnews24.com.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police, however, say they have no information about it. “I have no knowledge about it,” DB Deputy Commissioner Muntasirul Islam said.
On Oct 5, Khan was murdered by unknown assailants at his own home in Dhaka’s Badda. Police said that at least five men barged into his home and slaughtered the 68-year-old Khan.
There is a ‘Khankah Sharif’ (a place for religious gathering) at his home and many followed him as a ‘pir’ (saint). The killing is a reminder of last year’s murder of Islami Front leader Nurul Islam Farooqi at his Dhaka residence.
In 2013, self-styled ‘pir’ Lutfur Rahman was killed in the same way at his Gopibagh home.
Investigators are yet to solve the murder cases, but suspect militants were responsible and the motive was ideological conflicts.
