‘Tree Man’ could be cured with surgeries

Abul Bajandar, who was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday with a rare disease, can be cured through surgeries, hope specialist physicians.
Abul Bajandar, 25, son of Manik of Pikegachha in Khulna district, has been suffering from a rare disease, Dermo Epidermal Dysplasia, for the last 15 years.
Dubbed as a tree man because of wart-like lesions growing on his hands and feet, Abul Bajandar is the 3rd such patient in the world. The two patients were detected in Indonesia and Romania.
Talking to UNB, Prof Dr Md Abul Kalam, head of the DMCH Burn and Plastic Surgery unit, said a six-member medical board, headed by him, was formed on Sunday for the treatment of the youth.
The other members of the board are Chief Coordinator of National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Dr Samanta Lal Sen, Prof Dr Md Sajjad Khandker, Prof Dr Rayhana Awwal, Prof Dr Khan Abul Kalam Azad and Associate Prof Dr Md Emdadul Haque.
The medical board sat in a meeting in the morning and decided to carry out several tests, including viral marker one, said Dr Kalam. “It may take 5-7 days to get the test reports. We’ll decide our next step once the reports are at hand.”
He also expressed the hope that surgeries can cure the disease. Replying to a question, the burn unit chief said the actual reason behind the disease could not yet be ascertained even in other part of the world.
