Members of the law enforcement agencies and explosives experts on Monday visited the damaged three-story building in the capital’s Mogbazar where at least eight people were killed and 60 others injured in a massive blast on Sunday.
They examined the damage building in detail to find out possible reasons behind the explosion.
Visiting the scene on Monday noon, Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Inspector of the explosives department, said, “Hydrocarbons were found in the building.” This explosion can be caused by the accumulation of different types of gases.
This is not a normal explosion. Such a big explosion just because of a gas leak is unusual, he added.
When asked whether it was accident or sabotage, the chief inspector said, “We are still analysing all possibilities, including gas leakage. It could’ve also happened from electric spark. We won’t ignore any of the possibilities.”
A three-member probe body was formed with deputy chief explosive inspector as its chief and the committee will submit report within seven working days, he added.
“We are working with all other agencies including fire services and police to investigate the explosion. But it is too early to say anything conclusive right now,” he further added.
After visiting the blast site on Monday noon, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed said, “Smell of methyl gas was found at the place where the explosion occurred.”
The incident will be looked into by the bomb disposal unit of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit to explore that angle as well.
Meanwhile, a five-member probe body has been formed to investigate the Moghbazar blast, a spokesman of the Fire Service and Civil Defense headquarters told the media on Monday.
Director (operation) of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Lieutenant Colonel Zillur Rahman will lead the committee while its Deputy Director (Dhaka) Dinmoni Sharma will act as member secretary of the investigation committee.
The other committee members are: Assistant Director (Dhaka) Mohammad Salauddin, Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Bazlur Rashid and Warehouse Inspector Debabrata Mandal.
The committee has been asked to submit its report within seven working days.
Besides, police have formed a seven-member high-level probe committee over the terrible blast occurred in a building in the capital’s Mogbazar.
Additional Commissioner (AC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police made heads of the probe body.
DMCH outpost police inspector Bachchu Miah told the New Nation that after the incident those were taken to the DMCH burn units for treatment, almost patients left the hospital after taking the primary treatment on Monday.
At present, of the injured, only four persons are in the Burn Unit of DMCH and only five in the Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, Bachchu Miah.
At least seven people were killed and 60 others injured in a blast that took place in the city’s Moghbazar area last evening.
“So far, we have learned that seven buildings were affected in the Sharma House blast in Moghbazar.
However, the three-storey building in Moghbazar that was heavily damaged in yesterday’s explosion may collapse any time, fire service experts said on Monday.
“The building has been irreparably damaged,” Lt Col Zillur Rahman, director (operation) of Fire Service, told reporters after visiting the site.
