Gang rapes in Dhaka and elsewhere

In a span of only 15 days, three female students were gang-raped in Dhaka, Gopalganj and Bagerhat by the miscreants. According to media reports, a college girl was gang raped in Lalbagh, Dhaka, on February 12 and the perpetrators left the injured student in front of Raju Memorial Sculpture on Dhaka University campus. Again, a student of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) was gang-raped in Gopalganj and another schoolgirl in Bagerhat during the period.
These three incidents unfolded the outrageousness of miscreants and the insecurity of girls and women in our society. A university student was raped on the way to her quarters from the campus, and that clearly indicates how bad the law and order situation is. What sort of society are we living in? One the other hand, the government has established one university after another but they did not arrange accommodation for even half of the students. Consequently, a big portion of female students has to stay outside the campus. They have to live in rented quarters and this is one of the main reasons for their insecurity.
As reported, the miscreants dumped the college girl in front of Raju Memorial on DU campus following rape after abducting her from Lalbagh in the capital on February 12. On information Shahbagh police rescued the girl from the campus and rushed her to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital in the evening.
In Gopalganj, the victim, also a student of BSMRSTU, accompanied by a friend was returning home in Nabinbagh from the helipad on February 23. On their way four to five miscreants stopped them and took the girl to a nearby school building and raped her. The incident sparked protests on the campus the next day with students blocking Dhaka-Khulna Highway and demonstrating. Later, they withdrew the blockade upon the assurance of the varsity administration.
Another 9th-grader was gang-raped by four youths at a village of Kachua Upazila in Bagerhat on the night of February 24. According to her father, they were not at home on that night. The seriously injured girl was admitted to Bagerhat Sadar hospital on Friday.
We see no determination or ability on the part of government to save girls from the rapists. It is no use reminding police their duty to contain crime.
