Rangamati Correspondent :
Life of at least 800 families here is at stake since continuous rainfall has jeopardised their habitat at different vulnerable places. The district administration advised them to be shifted to safer places, but they are not paying heed to that.
Bishanath Majumder, relief and rehabilitation officer of the district, and Md. Tayub, Rangamati Sadar Upazila relief officer, along with a delegation of the district administration visited Shimultali and other vulnerable areas on Saturday noon and asked the people to take shelter at
safer places.
Bishanath Majumder told journalists that living at vulnerable places, like over and beside the hills, is very risky. A shelter was opened at the Bhedbhedi Government Primary School, but still the families are not moving there and to other safer places.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Rangamati Md Shamsul Arefin said, “To avoid damages and casualties, I have directed all upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) to be vigilant. A monitoring cell has been opened at the district administration office. During the last few days, several meetings with concerned officials were also held.”
A source of the district relief office said 80 tons of food crops and cash Tk 1.20 lakh have been kept ready to conduct relief operations after any calamities.
Fruit saplings distributed
Around 1,000 fruit saplings were distributed among about 100 farmers of the district. In this connection, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Foundation arranged a distribution programme at Ghagra under Kawkhali Upazila of the district on Saturday.
Agriculture Secretary Shyamal Kanti Ghosh distributed the seedlings as chief guest.
