Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley on Monday hosted special children with different abilities at his residence and enjoyed their cultural performances putting emphasis on their inclusion in society.
A new book titled “Amar Nam Runa” (My Name is Runa) was also launched at the event and reading of the book is expected to lead to more inclusive and open society.
The book tells the real life story of Runa depicting how she grew up and what are the difficulties she faced and what is the current way of living life for her.
“The book is about the life experience of a girl with disabilities and of appeal for new school building,” said EU Ambassador Whiteley.
Disabled Rehabilitation and Research Association (DRRA) Executive Director Farida Yesmin, Goodwill Ambassador Dinat Jahan Munni, Principal of DRRA Amar Jyoti Badda Special School Rabeya Neela, founder of Niketon Foundation Antoinette Termoshuizen also joined the function with the students.
“I’m delighted to host Amar Joti School for children with disabilities. Great performance by Goodwill Ambassador Dinat Jahan Munni,” said the EU envoy.
The event was organized ahead of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities that falls on December 3.
The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
Disability inclusion is an essential condition to upholding human rights, sustainable development, and peace and security, according to the United Nations.
