FBCCI President Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed said on Sunday that the national economy is facing disaster due to ongoing political turmoil.
“The economic backbone of the country is breaking down due to ongoing hartal and blockade and if it continues, the economy will face total disaster,” he said.
The FBCCI president came up with the apprehension while addressing at a token hunger strike organised by Bangladesh Specialized Textile Mills and Power loom Industries Association held at the National Press Club in the city, chaired by the Association’s President Azizul Haque.
Criticising the press conference of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed said, “We hoped that she will announce a logical solution over the current political impasse in her briefing. But she did not do it rather declared another round of ‘illogical’ political programme that frustrated the whole business community”.
“The ongoing blockade and hartal are ‘illogical and destructive,” said the FBCCI leader, adding, “The BNP chief may not expect a logical solution from the ruling party if she relies on such programmes”.
Expressing concern at these political programs, he said, “Miscreants are killing people by hurling petrol bombs in passenger buses and goods laden vehicles during the blockade and hartal. This is totally unacceptable…..This heinous politics should be stopped immediately”.
He further said that acts of sabotage and vandalism have created panic among the investors and manufacturers, affecting economic activities across the country. “If the blockade and hartal continue, then the economy will collapse.”
“We are always against such programmes as these are creating image crisis of the country,” he said.
Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed further said that the trade and commerce of the country is near to destruction due to the months-long blockade and hartal. Besides, people from all walks of life worry about consequences of the current political turmoil. So, the opposition alliance should stop the politics of hartal and blockade to maintain peace and stability of the country and keep the wheels of economy running.
FBCCI, the apex trade body of the country, earlier said that each day of blockade and hartal hits the economy with a loss of Tk 2,200 crore.
