The people of the coastal belt of Chittagong heaved a sigh of relief as the cyclone Mora weakened and crossed the land between Chittagong and Cox’s bazar without causing serious damages on Tuesday morning. Local Upazila Nirbahi Officers said some houses have been damaged and trees uprooted in Banshkhali and Sandwip upazilas.
Nearly one lakh people who had taken shelter in 475 cyclone shelter centres in the district have started returning to their residence after 2 pm today, Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mohammad Zillur Rahman Chowdhury told BSS. Moderate rain is continued with gusty winds and heavy rain is likely to linger for at least 12 more hours in the city and its adjacent districts, Potenga Met office said.
According to the Met Office, Mora crossed over Kutubdia in Cox’s Bazar at 6 am with a wind speed of 89 to 128 kilometre per hour. Under the influence of the cyclonic storm the low-lying areas of the coastal districts and their offshore islands and chars have been inundated by the storm surge of 3-5 feet height above normal astronomical tide, locals said. The meteorology department urged to show continue maritime port of Chittagong signal-3 following crossing the Mora.
The latest weather forecast says the sea will remain very rough and has advised all fishing boats, trawlers over the North Bay of Bengal and deep-sea to remain in shelter. Power supply which kept off since morning in Chittagong, the hill tract regions of Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban, and Cox’s Bazar have resumed from 2 pm, said Md Moniruzzaman, senior assistant public relation officer of Power Development Board (south).
All vessels which were berth inside the port gradually started their function from 3 pm today. Port sources said limited scale of port activities resumed from 3pm. Chittagong Shah Amanat International Air Port sources said flight operations resumed from 2.30 pm this afternoon after eight hours of disruptions.
The instruments and equipments of the air port which shifted to safer places yesterday has started to install again from 4 pm this afternoon, air force sources said.
Meanwhile, all ships of the national flag carrier Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) have started to return from the outer anchorage of the Chittagong port from 3 pm. Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has started their operations of all river transports after 4 pm.
