A group of Dhaka University students on Monday brought out a procession inside the campus protesting the attacks on Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Vice President Nurul Haque Nur and 29 others.
The protesters also a 24-hour ultimatum to the DU authorities to identify and arrest the culprits.
The ultimatum came from a rally held by the students under the banner of ‘Santrash Birodhi Chhatra Oikya’ at the Raju Sculpture on DU campus.
Several hundred students brought out the procession from the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture at 12:00 noon, which was part of their pre-planned protest programme announced by DUCSU Social Welfare Secretary Akhter Hossain.
Addressing the rally, Ganasanghati Andolon Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki said: “Attacking students using the name of Muktijuddho (liberation war) spirit is a big insult to the Liberation War.”
“Muktijuddho Mancha was formed under the patronage of current administration,” he added. Saki also expressed solidarity with the demonstrators and demanded punishment to the attackers.
Speaking at the rally, DUCSU Social Welfare Secretary Akhter Hossain said,” It’s very clear that Muktijuddho Mancha launched the attack at the directive of Chhatra League leaders. After that, BCL DU unit President Sonjit Chandra Das and Secretary Saddam Hussein joined them along with their activists.”
“We contacted the proctor over phone several times, but he didn’t respond. The university administration, especially proctor Golam Rabbani, can’t avoid their responsibility. That’s why we want proctor’s immediate removal,” Akhter said.
Demanding punishment to the attackers, he said, “We gave the authorities a 24-hour ultimatum to arrest the culprits, or else, we’ll go for a tougher movement.”
Akhter Hossain announced to hold another anti-terrorism student rally on Tuesday at the same venue. He urged the professionals of different occupations to voluntarily join their protest programme.
Progressive Students’ Alliance, a left leaning student body, has expressed solidarity with the protest.
Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice President Nurul Haque Nur and 29 others were injured in the attack allegedly carried out by activists of Chhatra League and Muktijuddha Mancha on Sunday.
VP Nur along with others was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital’s (DMCH) emergency unit for treatment around 2:00pm while DU proctor arrived on the spot after 45 minutes of the incident.
According to eyewitnesses, DUCSU VP office was also vandalized during the attacks.
