Citycell has been asked by the BTRC to explain why its licence would not be revoked.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) served a show-cause notice on Monday as the mobile-phone operator is yet to pay the fee to renew licence for its 2G operations.
The notice posted on the BTRC website says the company owes the regulator Tk 2.55 billion in licence renewal fees, spectrum charge, revenue sharing and contribution to Social Obligation Funds.
It said the deadline had expired long ago and Citycell was yet to pay the arrears despite several reminders.
The BTRC asked the company to come up with explanations by 30 days.
Bangladesh’s first mobile operator Citycell has been in doldrums for quite a long time as its subscriber base has been slumping constantly.
The only CDMA operator was nominated for a 3G operation licence but failed to obtain it as it did not pay the $20 million earnest money for it.
Operating in Bangladesh since 1989, Citycell, however applied to the regulator to convert its operation on a GSM platform last year.
