Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Md Tajul Islam urged the mayors of all city corporations in and outside Dhaka to be prepared for tackling the coronavirus pandemic.
“It is our (public representatives’) duty is to save people’s lives, secure their properties and mitigate their sufferings as we all are elected by the people of the country. I urge you all to stand by the people to tackle all possible untoward situations caused by the novel coronavirus,” he said.
The minister issued the directive on Thursday in an online meeting held on Wednesday night on the implementation of the zone-based lockdown by the Ministry of LGRD with the mayors of all the city corporations of the country.
He underscored the need for dividing the corona-affected areas into sub-zones without imposing a complete lockdown.
The minister said: “If one lakh people live in a ward and 200 people are affected with Covid-19, then lockdown could be imposed on only the concerned areas where these 200 people live in.”
A committee, comprising popular personalities in society, imams of the mosques, NGO and social workers, could be formed under the leadership of the ward councilor to manage the sub-zones as there is no alternative to involving locals in implementing zone or sub-zone based lockdowns, he added.
He said that a control room should be opened at a convenient place in the lockdown areas and the mobile number of the concerned control room should be given to the people of the areas so that residents can be made aware of the overall situation of the pandemic or lockdown.
