Harvest of Boro paddy is progressing fast in all the seven upazilas in the district during the current season amid much enthusiasm among the farmers. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has set a plan to bring a total of 1,25,967 hectares of land under the Boro cultivation this year with the production target of 5,08,786 tonnes of rice.
Of the total, some 19,650 hectares of land would be brought under the cultivation in Sadar Upazila, 14,650 in Sadullapur Upazila, 12,650 in Palashbari Upazila, 30,400 in Gobindaganj Upazila, 25,650 in Sundarganj Upazila, 14,800 in Shaghata Upazila and 8,167 in Fulchhari Upazila.
To bring the land under the cultivation programme, the farmers have prepared seed beds on 6,200 hectares of low land where the seedlings have grown well.
Though the green seedlings were affected due to cold wave with dense fog sweeping across the northern region including Gaibandha district, the department took precautionary measures to protect the seedlings from cold injuries by motivating the farmers.
Now, the farmers have become busy as they are preparing their land for transplanting the boro seedlings raised from the seedbed with the hope of getting desired output against the crop, said Mamtaz Uddin Bepari, a farmer of Samash area under Sundarganj upazila. To make the cultivation a grand success, necessary measures have been taken to supply fertilizers, insecticides, electricity and other agri inputs to the farmers at fair prices side by side ensuring irrigation facility, said an official of DAE.
Besides, the department is conducting training for the farmers at field level to boost crop production, said district training officer of DAE M. Aminul Islam. Engineer M. Mahbubor Rahman, deputy general manager of Sonali Bank Limited said both commercial and scheduled banks have taken initiatives to disburse loan to the farmers here on easy terms to help them cultivate the crop without economic hardship.
