Norway wants to sign an agreement with Bangladesh to send back illegal Bangladeshi nationals who seek political asylum in that country, Law Minister Anisul Haq said on Tuesday.
The subject was raised by Norwegian Ambassador in Dhaka Merete Lundemo during her meeting with the law minister at his office.
Anisul quoted the envoy as saying that many Bangladeshis seek political asylum in Norway after illegally entering the country. Norway faces complexities in sending these illegal migrants back to Bangladesh, the minister said.
The Norwegian envoy told the minister that her country will send a law ministry delegation to Dhaka to discuss with Bangladeshi officials the ways to resolve the issue.
The law minister said he assured the envoy of discussing the problems with relevant Bangladesh ministries and take necessary steps about Norway’s complaints.
During the meeting the envoy expressed Noway’s interest in increasing investment in information technology, oil and gas sectors in Bangladesh. She suggested the government modifies some rules and regulations of the Board of Investment (BOI) to attract more foreign investment.
