At least nine people were killed and 30 others injured as a bus hit a private car and a motorcycle at Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj on Saturday morning.
Among those killed in the accident are Basudeb Kumar Saha (52), a doctor at Dhaka’s Birdem Hospital, his wife Shibani Saha (48), and son Swapnil Saha (19), a student of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, Azizur Islam, 44, the driver of Basudeb Saha’s private car, farm labours Firoj Mollah (55) and his wife Ruma Begum (40) of South Fukra village of Gopalganj’s Kashiani upazila, motorcyclist and pillion rider Anik Raham Babu (28) of South Fukra village and Yasmin Aktar (19) of Khayerhat village under Kashiani upazila, and bus passenger Altaf Hossain Khan (50), of Patharghata in Barguna.
Dr Basudeb was going to his village home with his wife and son to see his ailing mother.
Firoz and Ruma were plowing land next to the road while Anik and Yasmin were returning home from Kashiani on a motorcycle.
Confirming the information, Bhanga Highway Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Sirajul Islam said the tragic incident occurred when a passenger bus of Rajib Paribahan collided with a private car and a motorcycle on the Dhaka-Khulna highway at around 11am.
At least 30 others were injured in the incident, he added. Upon receiving the news, police, fire service personnel and locals rescued the victims and took them to Gopalganj General Hospital and Kashiani Hospital.
Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner Shahida Sultana, Kashiani Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mehedi Hasan, Gopalganj Sadar UNO Mahasin Uddin and other senior officials of district and police administration visited the spot.
