Better results in HSC, equivalent exams

M M Jasim :A total of 8,99,150 students passed the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent examinations-2016 with 74.70 percent pass rate while it was 69.60 percent last year across the country. This year 12,03,640 students took part in the HSC and equivalent examinations of all the 10 boards, including Madrasah Education Board and Technical Education Board. Of them 58,276 examinees in all the education boards achieved Grade Point Average (GPA)-5 this year, up from last year’s 42,894.The pass rate is 73.53 percent under Dhaka Education Board, 68.59 percent under Sylhet, 64.49 percent under Comilla, 75.40 percent under Rajshahi, 70.64 percent under Dinajpur, 64.60 percent under Chittagong, 83.82 percent under Jessore and 70.13 percent under Barisal board. The pass rates in Madrasah and Technical boards are 88.19 and 84.57 percent respectively.A total of 28,110 students got GPA-5 in Dhaka, 1,330 in Sylhet, 1,912 in Comilla, 6,075 in Rajshahi, 3,899 in Dinajpur, 2,253 in Chittagong, 4,586 in Jessore, 787 in Barisal, 2,414 in Madrasah and 6,587 in Technical board. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid disclosed the results at a press conference in the media room of the ministry on Thursday. Earlier in the morning, the minister handed over the copy of the results to Prime Minister at her official residence Ganobhaban while Education Secretary Sohrab Hossain, top officials of the ministry and chairman of all the boards were present there. After receiving the results, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina congratulated the students as well as the teachers, and the guardians for the successes of the students.Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid expressed his satisfaction over the success rate and GPA-5. “I am very glad to know that the students are doing better. Definitely the students will be the assets of the country,” he said. He also thanked the officials of the ministry and chairman of all the education boards for preparing the results within 57 days. All 848 educational institutions have achieved 100 percent pass. Besides, some 25 educational institutions witnessed a zero pass rate this year against last year’s 35.The pass rate of male students is 73.93 percent whereas the pass rate of the female students is 75.60 percent.Some 29, 325 more female students took part in this year’s HSC examinations than the male students whereas some 7,629 more female students came out successful.The number of educational institutions in this year’s HSC and equivalent exams also rose to 8,345 up from 8,294 last year. The number of exam centers also increased to 2,621 this year, up from last year’s 2,420.Out of the eight Education Boards under HSC examinations, some 10,07,053 students took part in this year’s examinations where some 7,29,803 students passed with a success rate of 72.47 percent. The total number of examinees in the HSC examinations last year was 8,76,476 when some 5,57,087 students came out successful with a success rate of 65.84 percent.Some 48,950 students got GPA 5 in this year’s HSC examinations, up from last year’s 34,721.Under the Madrasha Education Board, some 89,603 students participated in this year’s examinations against last year’s 79,020 students when the success rate was 88.19 percent.Last year, some 82,558 students took part in the examinations under Madrasah Board when some 74,461 students passed with a success rate of 90.19 percent. Some 2414 students got GPA 5 this year under this Board, up from last year’s 1,135.In the Technical Education Board, some 1,02,248 students took part in this year’s exams against 86,469 students passed it with a success rate of 84.57 percent with some 6,587 students achieving GPA 5.The examinees can get their results at their respective examination centres, websites of their respective education boards and through short message service (SMS) after 2:00pm, said ministry officials. The results will also be available on the website www.educationboardresults.gov.bdThe HSC examinations began on April 3 with over 1.2 million (12,18,628) examinees taking part in the exams from 8,533 educational institutions.Of the total examinees, 654,114 are males and 564,514 females. The theoretical part of the examinations ended on June 9 while the practical examinations were held from June 11 through June 20.
