UNB, Dhaka :
Mothers play a central and critical role in the prevention and the fight against radicalism when terrorism has become a common threat to all across the world today.
We all know the story of Saliha Ben Ali, a Muslim of Tunisian origin born in Brussels, Belgium who offers tools to help parents educate their children the best they can and save the generation.
Founder and Director of the Belgium chapter of the Society against Violent Extremism (SAVE) Saliha Ben Ali shared her experiences with civil society organisations at a seminar titled ‘Campaign to Counter Violent Extremism: Learning from Society against Violent Extremism (SAVE) Belgium’ at Dhaka University on Tuesday.
Ben Ali lost one of her sons in 2013 who left his family in response to calls to militancy and radicalisation.
She started looking for answers to understand the reasons why her son chose
the path he did, instead of staying with his loving family.
This inspired her to establish SAVE Belgium as she wanted to prevent others from such tragedy. Ben Ali strongly believes challenges can be overcome through joint efforts.
She shared on how to support families affected by the loss or departure of a family member who joined an extremist group or cause.
Ben Ali is the mother of four children and has been working as a social worker for the last 20 years.
In August 2013, her second son Sabri left his loving family to “save the world”. He said he joined the land of Sham, Syria and he never returned. Her son died in December 2013 in circumstances as yet not fully understood.
The Ben Ali family was traumatised and devastated by this event, a tragedy shared by many other families around the world. Ultimately, Ben Ali’s suffering became her strength.
