Staff Reporter :
Progress in writer-blogger Avijit murder case is slow for want of forensic reports of the evidence taken away by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for DNA test.
“The FBI will give its test report to the government at free of cost. The report on the DNA samples will be verified to find a match with the accused persons. The reports will reach to Dhaka soon,” Monirul Islam, Additional Commissioner of Detective Branch and DMP spokesman said this at a press conference at the city’s police media centre on Monday.
The FBI would hand over all the reports at a time after completion of the examination, Islam said, adding that they have already found DNA profiles of some persons from the evidence.
“Those who have so far been arrested in the case are yet to give their confessional statement in the court. So, their link with either the killing or Ansarullah Bangla Team is still not sure. At least seven more people are involved in the murder. It will be clear whether they are the followers of Ansarullah chief Jasimuddin Rahmani
once they are caught,” the DMP spokeman said.
On February 26 last year, Avijit Roy, founder of the progressive blog site ‘Mukto-Mona’ was hacked to death by unknown assailants near TSC on the Dhaka University campus while he along with his wife Rafida Ahmed Banya were returning from the Ekushey Boi Mela. His wife also received injuries in the attack.
Detective Branch of police on March 11 handed over the evidence of Avijit murder to the FBI for DNA test.
The FBI got the evidence a day after a Dhaka court ordered the detectives to get a DNA test done by the US investigation agency.
On the following day of the murder, US Department of State Spokesperson Jen Psaki in a statement said that Washington was ready to assist the investigation into the brutal killing, if sought.
Later on March 5, a four-member team of FBI arrived in Dhaka to help in the investigation.
