Talk shows in electronic media could most effectively voice people’s concern over sensitive national issues. When public safety or protection of life and property is at high risk, militancy is threatening the state spreading panic at all levels and businesses are facing major setback, some talk shows waste time highlighting the party fight between Awami League and BNP is so irrelevant that right solution is not considered important.
It often looks like a live drama in anger and body language of participants, defending party lines and blaming each other particularly when mid-level Awami League and BNP leaders sit turning the overheated discussion to confrontation of their own. The main issue is lost.
People had expected electronic media would play a significant role to analyse the serious crisis for a rational solution. The proper persons who have knowledge about the problem of violent reaction should be heard.
The young ones who are killed as terrorists or who kill others cannot be lightly taken. It is alright for those who want to divert attention from our own cause of anger and frustration. It is easy to say that our young ones are influenced by international terrorism and there is no cause in the country for the young ones to feel ready to give their lives.
We have to accept that international terrorism has their own cause, and our terrorism has our own cause. And terrorism in Bangladesh has grown over the years and it cannot be true that international terrorism has entered Bangladesh suddenly.
The crossfire killings and forced disappearances have been going for years. Police killed nine militants on Monday at Kalyanpur area and without going into controversy of the situation and whether they could be arrested alive; it appears that militancy has already turned into a political blame game to implicate the opposition BNP and Jamaat being behind it. But what is not highlighted is that boys of Awami League families have also been found killed as terrorists.
The nation is too much worried by killing events and do not want to hear about a party blame game.
What we want to say is that Tv talk shows are exploiting controversial political issues often misleading the real crisis.
Blaming BNP or Jamaat is not enough, the government has to ensure safety of the people. It is the government’s own responsibility and competence.
Some of our journalists cannot forget that by being party activist of the government, they have become so unhelpful to solve the real crisis in Bangladesh. We are given theories of international terrorism found in other countries, but no help in our situation.
The government must ensure safety and normalcy. If not the government has to accept its failure. In this regard, responsible people from the government and police need to explain why the panic of insecurity is not contained for normal activities to be possible.
The party power struggle between Awami League and BNP denied good governance and now we have terrorism.
