Agro Expo-14 begins today

Staff Reporter :The fourth Agro-Bangladesh Expo-2014 begins today (Thursday) at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) to introduce the farmers with modernization of farming and food grain processing, the Agriculture Ministry said.Besides Bangladesh, eight other countries namely India, China, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, Korea (South) and Germany will participate in the fair. About 1000 scientists, researchers and agri- traders from home and abroad will represent about one hundred government and non-government institutes. Several papers will be presented in six technical sessions during the three days Agriculture expo.The foreign and local agri-experts and growers and businessmen will share and exchange their views here.Commerce Minister Tofael Ahmed as the chief guest will open the fair while Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury will be present as special guest.This was disclosed in a press conference held at Agriculture Ministry on Wednesday. Anowar Faruk, Additional Secretary and Director General of Seed Wing addressed the conference. The objective of the fair is that government wants to attract foreign investment in agriculture sector to help the farmers get fair price of their products. Modern technologies, which were used during pre and post harvesting period in the developed country, might be introduced in the country by attracting foreigners in the sector, he said.About 225 stalls (local and foreign) will display Seeds, Pesticide, Agri-equipment, food processing technologies, harvesting technology and packaging and marketing theme.The expo will remain open from 11 am to 7pm everyday (Thursday to Saturday). No entry fee is required.Additional Secretaries of the ministry Nazmul Islam, Begum Vikaroon Nesa, Director General of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council Dr. M Kamal Uddin, Joint Secretaries Selima Akhter Banu and Mosharaf Hossain and Shafiur Rahman, Director General of Agriculture Extension Division, among others, were present.
