Maintain status quo on Kajla Beel: HC

The High Court on Monday ordered to maintain the status quo on filling up of Kajla Beel area in Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj district until the hearing of its previous rule regarding the beel concludes.
A bench of Justice Syed Mohammad Dastagir Hossain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by lawyer Taimur Alam Khandakar.
Earlier, on October 24, the HC issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why their inaction to protect the lands, ponds and canals in Kajla Beel area should not be declared illegal. The HC issued the rule after a writ petition was filed by four locals, including Badsha Mia, following a report recently published in a national daily.

Already 700 acres of cropland of local land office has been filled up in the name of Rimjhim Police Town and Italian City Housing Project damaging the environment in the area, advocate Taimur Alam Khandker, said.
