5 sedative gang members held in city

Detective Branch (DB) of Police in a drive arrested a Sonali Bank cashier and four others for their alleged link with the illegal drug trade from the city’s Motijheel area early Wednesday.
Police also seized at least 1,800 banned Ativan pills from their possession, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) spokesman Monirul Islam.
The arrested persons are Abul Bashar, cashier of Sonali Bank, Abdul Matin, Mohammad Selim, Mohammad Shimul, and Mohammad Abul Hossain, the DMP Joint Commissioner said.
Bashar worked at Sonali Bank’s Principal Branch in Motijheel and owner of Gausia Pharmacy in the Culvert Road under Motijheel thana, DB’s Monirul Islam said.
He used to bring Ativan tablets from the border areas and sell them to a gang of muggers, known as ‘Sedative Party’, the DB official said.
The DB official claimed that the members of law enforcing agencies have already arrested at least 54 members of ‘sedative gang’ in the city’s different parts during Ramzan.
A case has been filed with the Motijheel Police Station in this connection.
