106 arrested in special drives

Chittagong District police in overnight special drives arrested 106 persons including 11 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir from different upazilas of Chittagong district on Thursday and Friday morning .
The law enforcers also recovered four cocktails and 1,900 pieces of Yaba tablets during the drives.
Confirming the matter, Mohammad Naimul Hasan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Special Branch) of Chittagong district said the police also held an activist of Jamaate Islami and four activists of Shibir during special drive and the others were accused in different cases.
They are accused in cases of sabotage, Naimul Hasan added.
He said that of the detainees, eight persons were accused in regular cases while 87 others were wanted in different cases.
Suspected militant leader held : Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a leader of the new militant outfit “Shahid Hamza Brigade (SHB)” from Chittagong Railway station area recently.
The arrested was identified as Khaled Hasan alias Rakib, 22, chief of SHB’s military wing “White Group”, hailed from Chandpur Sadar upazila of Chandpur district. A team of RAB-7, being informed, arrested Rakib from railway station area under the city’s Kotwali police station around 7am and took him to the RAB-7 headquarters in city’s Patenga area for interrogation, RAB sources said.
Earlier on June 4, RAB arrested SHB second-in-command Sajal, 27, and its active member Shamsu from city’s AK Khan area.
Acting on a tip-off, the elite force in separate drives nabbed four members of the outfit with huge arms and ammunition from city’s Kotwali and AK Khan areas on April 12.
After the arrest, Lieutenant Colonel Miftah Uddin Ahmed, commanding officer of RAB 7, in a press conference told the reporters that the SHB started operation in November 2013 by holding a meeting at a hotel near the Foy’s Lake of the port city.
The Hamza Brigade has three separate military wings – blue, green and white and each of its wings comprises seven members – all trained up as “one man army”, Miftah added.
Boy burnt to death : A boy was burnt to death and two others were injured after a fire broke out in a shop at Enayet Bazar area under city’s Kotwali thana on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Naieem, 14, son of Amir Hossain, hailed from Hashem Nagar area under Borhan Uddin thana of Bhola.
The injured -Yasin, 32 and Mohon, 25 were undergoing treatment at the burn unit of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Fire Brigade sources said three persons were injured in a fire originated from electric short circuit at a food shop at Goalapara area of Enayet Bazar.
CMCH police outpost sources said the three persons were admitted to the hospital where Naieem succumbed to his burn injuries.
