Zila Parishad polls campaign gains momentum in Sylhet Division

With only six day left, the campaign for the Zila Parishad polls has gained momentum in four districts under the Sylhet Division. The candidates are going to the houses of voters and seeking votes.
Sylhet Zila Parishad has 1,436 voters. Four candidates are contesting for the post of chairman while 28 for the posts of member. The voters include 37 ward councillors of Sylhet City Corporation, chairmen and members of 105 union parishads, chairmen and vice-chairmen of 12 upazilas and mayors and councillors of four pourasavas in the district.
Although BNP has fielded no candidate, they have a good number of voters who might influence the polls, sources said.
Election campaign by district AL president and former lawmaker Luthfur Rahman, also the past zila parishad administrator, is going on in the district. He would soon address a press conference on his candidature.
Private college principal Enamul Haque Sarder has also a group of well-wishers from both AL and BNP camps. At a press conference on Saturday night, Sarder announced his 8-point manifesto. He promised to protect the wealth of zila parishad, and create tourism-friendly facilities.
Former district BCL president and freedom fighter Ziauddin Lala is also in the race. Another candidate is Fokhrul Islam.
Moulvibazar district AL chief Aziur Rahman, also a former lawmaker and zila parishad administrator, is again competing in the polls apart from former BNP lawmaker MM Shahin and three others.
Sunamganj district will witness a tough contest between past zila parishad administrator Barrister Enamul Kabir Imon, also district AL general secretary, and FBCCI director Nurul Huda Mukut, also ex-district AL general secretary. However, three more candidates including British expatriate Chanchala Dass are also in the race.
Habiganj district AL chief Mushfiq Hossain Chowdhury has been declared elected chairman uncontested. But 16 candidates are contesting for five member posts.
