Police on Saturday arrested a young man from Panchlaish area in Chittagong city following a case filled for desecrating Islam through posting an objectionable photo on his Facebook account.
The arrestee was identified as Sujan Kanti Dev, 21, son of Satya Ranjan Dev of Brindabonpara under Kanchan Nagar union of Fatikchhari upazila of Chittagong.
Hafiz Aktar, superintendent of police (SP), Chittagong, said, “The objectionable post regarding Kaba Sharif released from Sujan Dev’s Facebook account on Thursday night created bitter resentment among the people of Fatikchhari.”
“We primarily calmed down the angry people by assuring them of arresting the accused,” he added. Police began a drive to arrest Sujan following a case lodged with Fatikchhari Police Station against him, said the SP.
SI Habibullah on Friday lodged the case under Section 57 of ICT Act-2006. The accused was compelled to surrender to the Panchlaish Police Station yesterday noon in the face of the police raid, said the SP.
