The 8th World Kidney Day will be observed in Bangladesh today like other countries in the world for raising awareness about kidney disease. This observance, taking place on the second Thursday of every March since 2006, was initiated by two organisations, the International Federation of Kidney Foundations and the International Society of Nephrology, to raise awareness of kidney diseases, especially chronic kidney disease (CKD). The day will focus of the campaign that will raise awareness of how important our kidneys are and how to reduce kidney disease with the slogan ‘Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and Aging’. Different organization and Health and Family Welfare Ministry have chalked out an elaborate programme on the day for public education and awareness.Health and Family Planning Minister Mohammad Nasim is expected to attend a discussion as the chief guest at The Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) at 11 am to mark the day.Health experts said nearly 20 million people in the country suffer from kidney disease and majority of them could not know about their kidney damage due to its asymptomatic nature. They said people having high blood pressure and diabetes should regularly follow up their kidney status once their age crosses 30.
