UNB, Dhaka :
Bangladesh has requested UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and UN agencies to work more in Rakhine State of Myanmar to help create a conducive environment there so that Rohingyas can get back confidence to return their place of origin.
“You should work more in Rakhine rather than in Bangladesh. I conveyed this,” Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told reporters at his office as conveyed the message to the UN chief and UN agencies during his recent meetings in New York.
While talking to a small group of reporters at his office, Dr Momen said he also highlighted how the entire region will be affected if the problem remains unresolved.
“The UN Secretary General is very keen to see a solution to the Rohingya crisis as quickly as possible,” said the Foreign Minister.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Foreign Minister Dr Momen had a meeting in New York last week when Guterres said he had been putting in his best efforts to find a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis.
At the bilateral meeting in New York, the UN chief and the Foreign Minister discussed a number of specific issues to expedite the efforts of the international community.
The UN chief expressed concern over the Rohingya issue and thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, including the people of Bangladesh, for their generosity in hosting a large number of Rohingya population on humanitarian ground.
Bangladesh is currently hosting over 1.1 million Rohingyas
and most of them entered the country since August 25 amid military crackdowns and “ethnic cleansing” of the Rohingya minority.
Responding to a question, Dr Momen said he was informed that the UN agencies are gradually getting scope to work in Myanmar.
About Priya Saha’s recent remarks, he said Bangladesh is a model country and shining example of religious harmony in the world.
He said there is no country in the world where all enjoy public holidays during all religious festivals.
The Foreign Minister said the government expects that organisers of such a big international event would invite responsible individuals who would objectively contribute to promoting the true spirit and value of religious freedom.
On July 20, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, said it appears that there was an ulterior motive behind Priya Saha’s absolutely false and concocted stories that were targeted to malign Bangladesh.
“Bangladesh is a beacon of religious freedom and communal harmony, where the people of all faiths have been living in peace for ages,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, strongly protesting all the blatant lies said by Priya Saha to US President Donald Trump.
The government also condemned her remarks in the strongest possible terms.
Priya Saha participated in the Second Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom held at the US Department of State in Washington, DC on July 16-18.
Foreign Minister Momen attended the meeting.
Delegates from 106 countries, including about 40 Foreign Ministers, attended the meeting at the invitation of Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State.
