Seasonal rawhide traders claim to have suffered massive losses during the Eid-ul-Azha in Dhaka this year.
The wholesalers have cited a ‘misunderstanding’ on the government-fixed rates as the reason behind the loss.
After failing to get fair prices of rawhide bought from people who slaughtered cattle on the Eid day on Wednesday, many of the seasonal traders stopped buying when some citizens slaughtered cattle on Thursday.
Trader Zahir Uddin at Segunbagicha bought 150 cow hides on Wednesday for Tk 600 to Tk 900 apiece from the residents of the area.
He, however, had to sell the hides for Tk 400 per piece later in the night after failing to find any customer, he said.
The government has lowered the price of Eid cowhide to Tk 45 to 50 per square foot in Dhaka and Tk 35 to 40 outside the capital this year from up to Tk 55 of last year.
The price of goat hide is fixed from Tk 13 to 20 per square foot.
After the tanneries were shifted from Hazaribagh to Savar, the main collection points of rawhides on Eid are Science Laboratory, Lalbagh’s Posta, Nababpur, and Raysaheb Bazar.
Many seasonal hide traders at these spots alleged on Wednesday that the wholesalers were waiting for the prices to drop.
On Thursday, Jahid Hossain, the manager of Pragati Leather Complex at Posta, said the seasonal traders fell in trouble because they bought the hides at higher rates.
“The government-fixed rates are for us. We will sell the hides to the tanners after applying salt to preserve those,” he said, adding that they would have to bear the cost of transporting the hides to Savar.
Wholesaler Lal Mia also said he could not pay as much as the seasonal traders had paid the people who had slaughtered cattle.
Aftab Uddin, former president of the Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchant Association, said, “The government lowered hide prices in the domestic market following a fall in the prices in the international market. But the seasonal traders did not understand it.”
The association aims to collect 1 million hides from Dhaka and adjacent areas.
Its President Hajji Delwar Hossain said they collected 400,000 hides in two days.
