Water in Padma-Jamuna in Manikganj rising

Even though the monsoon season is over, the water level in other rivers including Padma-Jamuna of Manikganj is rising with time. The water of Jamuna river is flowing 51 cm below the danger level. Manikganj Water Development Board has forecast moderate flood.
Faruk Hossain, a grease reader at Aricha Point, said on Tuesday, August 17, “The water level at Aricha Point of the Jamuna River is rising due to the downpour and rains. This is affecting other rivers in the district. The water level at Aricha Point has risen by 41 cm in the last week.”
Manikganj Sadar Upazila Tara Point grease reader Rafiqul Islam said, “The water level of Kaliganga river has started rising at Tara Point for the last few days.” He also said that the water level at this point of Kaliganga river has risen by 16 cm in 24 hours.
Delwar Hossain, a grease reader at Tilli Point on the Dhaleshwari River in Saturia Upazila, said, “The water level at this point has risen by 28 cm in the last 24 hours. The water level of the Dhaleshwari River has been rising rapidly for the last three days.
Meanwhile, erosion has started in other rivers including Padma-Jamuna with the increase of water. People on the banks of Padma, Jamuna, Kaliganga and Dhaleshwari rivers have lost their way. In the face of extinction are the important riverine settlements of the district, agricultural lands and dwellings.
Ujjwal Hossain, a resident of Kanchanpur Union in Harirampur Upazila of the district, said, “With the rise of water in the Padma, massive erosion has started. In the current season, at least 100 houses have been washed away in the Padma in Kanchanpur Union alone.”
Barek Mia, a resident of Sutalari area of the same upazila, said, “Currently, one-third of Sutalari Ramchandrapur Government Primary School has been washed away by the river Padma. Hundreds of houses and crop lands are in the process of erosion.
Manikganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Main Uddin said, “The water level in the Padma-Jamuna River in Manikganj is rising. At the same time, erosion has started. Efforts are being made to stop the erosion by dropping the geo-bags. The water of Jamuna River is still flowing 51 cm below the danger level. There is a possibility of moderate flood in Manikganj.”
