Water supplied by Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority stinks in different parts of the capital city.
Citizens complained that they were in hardship with water to drink, cook, washing cloths and other households and to take bath as it is unbearable odorous.
People of those areas have been infected badly by Diarrhoea and stomach disorders.
“Pipe supply water in our area at Gandaria is seriously stinking. We are facing difficulties in drinking water, washing faces, cloths, household appliances and taking bath,” said Abul Hossain, owner of the Medicine Point at Gandaria.
According to the residents, odorous water is found in Jurain, Mir Hazirbagh, Islampur, Lalbagh, Bashabo, Shajahanpur and Malibagh, among others.
People and the school going children are suffering from the odorous water. Many of them are infected in diarrhea and stomach related sickness. As a result, a good number of students remain absent in the classes every day. About the reasons of the stinking water, citizens said, the water pipes are installed six to seven feet beneath the surface in the old part in the city.
They said, whenever the building owners failed to connect with the pipe, they dig another hole. Such a practice made huge holes in the pipelines, but many of those are not filled in. Because, whenever they try to fill the holes, the under surface water obstructs. So they failed. The dirty water from sewerage lines and drains are mixed with the WASA water through those holes,” Humayun Kabir, a, businessman from Islampur in old Dhaka told The New Nation.
When Contacted, Dhaka WASA Managing Director Engineer Taqsim A Khan told The New Nation, “The repair work of those water pipe lines is going on fast. We are trying to complete it as early as possible.”
He said also that WASA officials will visit those areas to take necessary measures to solve the problem.
The WASA MD said the modern pipe lines will be computarised.
He said, “The construction work of the new computarised system of the pipe lines started from 2012 and will take several more years to be completed.
