Mintu Abdur Rahman, Rangpur :
The cultivation of vegetables has changed the fate of many farmers in 8 upazilas under Rangpur district in recent time.
Many farmers who once used to cultivate paddy, wheat, jute and other crops in their fields are now cultivating vegetables as the cultivation of it has become more profitable than the cultivation of other crops.
A good number of farmers in different upazilas under the district have been producing different varieties of vegetables commercially for the last few years and many of them have already become financially solvent.
Farmers are now producing different high-yielding varieties of vegetables like tomato, cauliflower, cabbage, pumpkin, radish, egg plants etc by using modern agro technology and achieving profits.
Maynul, a farmer of Bhurarghat area in Sadar upazila, said, he cultivated egg plants on 2 bighas of land this season by spending Tk 12,000 and earned Tk 40,000 from its sale. He also cultivated cabbage on 1 bigha of land and is expecting good return, he also said.
After meeting the local demand the vegetables are being sent to the Dhaka and other parts of the country. Everyday more or less 10 to 15 trucks carrying different varieties of vegetables are sent to Dhaka and others parts of the country.
Many farmers alleged that due to lack of proper marketing policy the middlemen or wholesalers are making extra profits depriving them of the fair price. They urged the government to take proper steps for marketing vegetables for the sake of the farmers.
