The parliamentary polls over, the Election Commission now plans to conduct the Upazila Parishad elections from next month. It is expected to announce the schedule next week for polls in least 150 Upazilas in February. There was a plan to announce the schedule for the first-phase of polls after a meeting on Sunday, an Election Commissioner told bdnews24.com after a commission meeting on Thursday. “Election in the Upazilas where polls have become due will be held gradually.” He said the voters’ list of 40 Upazilas, where elections are due in the third week of next month, had already been completed. Polls in the 487 Upazilas are due between February and September this year. The previous Election Commission, led by ATM Shamsul Huda, conducted the last Upazila polls across the country on Jan 22, 2009.
