The HC directed the authorities to run the trial simultaneously in two cases over the gang rape of a woman and extortion at MC College in Sylhet
The High Court on Sunday ordered commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police to provide security to plaintiff, witnesses and lawyers engaged in sensational Sylhet MC College gang rape case.
A High Court division virtual bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after holding a hearing on a plea filed in this regard.

The court ordered Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal to hold trials simultaneously in two cases – gang rape of a woman and extortion at MC College in Sylhet.
Currently the tribunal is holding trial of rape charge and Sylhet District and Sessions Judge Court is holding the trial of charge of threats and snatching valuables from the victim.
Advocate Sabrina Jerin and Advocate M Abdul Kaiyum Liton stood for the plaintiff while Deputy Attorney General Sarowar Hossain represented the state.
Police had filed two separate charge-sheets before two separate courts over the crimes. We had pleaded with the tribunal to hold trials of both the charges simultaneously. Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on January 24 rejected that plea. We later appealed against the lower court order with the High Court.
The High Court today [on Sunday] came up with this order after holding a hearing on our plea,Ó petitionerÕs lawyer Barrister M Abdul Kaium told.
Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on January 17, 2021, has framed charges in the rape case.
All the accused – Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni, Tarekul Islam, Arjun Lashkar, Ainuddin alias Ainul, Misbaul Islam alias Rajan, Robiul Islam and Mahfujur Rahman alias Masum – have been arrested and are now in jail.
A group of youths tied up a man and raped his 19-year-old wife at a dormitory of MC College on September 25, 2020.
After police rescued the couple, the victims husband filed a case with Shahporan police station against nine people mentioning the names of six.
A countrywide protest had sparked following the rape incident, forcing the government to take prompt action.
Protesters also took to the streets demanding capital punishment of the rapists.
Police on December 3, 2020, filed charge-sheet in rape case against eight.
