Uttara EPZ playing vital role in dev: NBR chief

The Uttara export processing zone (EPZ) is playing a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of the Northern Region by attracting investment, increasing exports and generating employment.
Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem, chairman of National Board of Revenue (NBR) and senior secretary of the Internal Resource Division, stated this during his visit to the Uttara EPZ (UEPZ) on Saturday, said a press release.
He said that despite the limitations of its geographical location, diverse products are being manufactured by industries set up in the UEPZ. He praised the innovative business strategy of the investors of the UEPZ.
Member (Investment Promotion) of Bepza Md Mahmudul Hossain Khan, briefed the NBR chairman on the overall activities and recent achievements of Bepza. He highlighted some problems of existing investors of EPZs and pointed out that some proposals to ease the policies of the NBR could attract more investment to the EPZs.
General Manager of Uttara EPZ, Naheed Munshi said, “24 operational and five under-implementation factories of the UEPZ have attracted $210 million of investment where employment opportunities have been created for 35,000 Bangladeshi workers.”
“Different diverse products of world-famous brands – including model cars, wigs, optical frames, leather bags, and coffins – are being manufactured in the Uttara EPZ,” she added.
Later, the NBR chairman visited six factories of the UEPZ and expressed his satisfaction after observing the production activities and overall existing working environment, stated the press release.
Member (Tax Policy) Md Alamgir Hossain, Member (Vat Policy) Md Masud Sadiq of NBR, the deputy commissioner of Nilphamari, the customs commissioner of Rangpur, and the general manager (Investment Promotion) of Bepza were present during this time, among others.
