UP elections: AL wins 19 chairman posts, Independent 23 in Sylhet Div

Awami League (AL) backed candidates won 20 chairman posts and independent candidates secured 24 in the union parishad polls in Sylhet Division on Thursday. In the second phase of union parishad elections on Thursday, the election of 44 UPs of Sylhet division was completed. One of the polls was postponed due to clashes. The results of the remaining 43 were announced overnight.
According to the announced results, 20 Awami League candidates, 12 Independent, 10 Awami League rebel candidates and one Khilafat Majlis triumphed. Voting has been postponed in one union.
Out of 12 independent candidates, 10 are BNP leaders and one belongs to the Jamaat e Islam.
Awami League candidate Hiran Mia won at Mogalgaon of Sylhet Sadar Upazila, independent candidate Jamaat leader Abdul Monaf at Kandigaon, Obaidullah Ishaq of Jalalabad and Maulana Rafiq of Khilafat Majlis at Hatkhola.
Independent candidate BNP leader Alamgir Hossain Alam at Islampur East Union, Awami League rebel candidate Abdul Wadud Alfu at Telikhale, Independent candidate Sajjadur Rahman at Ichakals, Awami League’s Faizur Rahman in North Ranikhai and Awami League’s Iqbal Hossain Emad at South Ranikhai have emerged victorious.
Independent candidate BNP leader in Sadar Union out of 6 unions of Balaganj. Abdul Munim, independent candidate BNP leader Mujibur Rahman Mujib in East Gauripur, Awami League rebel Abdur Rahman Makhan in West Gauripur, Anhar Mia of Awami League in Boaljore, Nazmul Alam of BNP in Dewanbazar and Shihab Uddin of Awami League in East Pailanpur have won.
Moulvibazar: In the second phase of Union Parishad elections, the boat candidate has won in one of the 5 unions of Juri upazila of Moulvibazar. The boat candidates were defeated in all the four unions. Here the Awami League rebels in 2 unions and Independent (BNP) candidates in 2 unions have won.
According to EC sources, in Sylhet division, there were 68 candidates for the post of chairman, 520 candidates for the post of general ward member and 157 candidates for the post of reserved ward member.
In the second phase, elections were held in 4 unions of Sylhet Sadar upazila, 6 unions of Balaganj, 5 unions of Companiganj, 10 unions of Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj, 9 unions of Doarabazar, 5 unions of Ajmiriganj of Habiganj district and 5 unions of Juri upazila of Moulvibazar.
It is learned that there were 2,300 candidates in the final contest in this election. Among them, 198 people have fought for the post of chairman while, 1,720 fought to become ward members and 482 were candidates for reserved ward members post.
