Universities play vital role in building knowledge -based society: Dr Shirin

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury yesterday said that universities in the country are playing vital role in establishing knowledge and justice based society.
She said knowledge is the soul of a society and universities are spreading education for changing society.
“The present government has given priority on education and is working to ensure quality and information technology based education for all in order to implement its Vision 2021”, Dr Shirin Sharmin said.
She came up with the observation while addressing the Golden Jubilee celebration of Chittagong University here this noon.
Addressing the 50 years founding anniversary celebration as the chief guest, she said the CU has become a part of global community through rendering knowledge and producing scholars and luminaries who are working at home and abroad.
“CU is a part of our glorious history and culture and it has developed a vast store house of knowledge through research, critical thinking and creative knowledge”, she said adding that the alumni of this university are a landmark of the glorious history of this university.
Urging the existing students of the university to make them qualified for global competition, the Speaker said the country will go forward through flourish of merit and proficiency.
She also advised the alumni of the university to come forward in order to represent the university as well as the country before the world.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury presided over the function while Prof Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman delivered the Golden Jubilee speech on the occasion.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the day’s scheduled programme through video conference around 10.30am.
CU acting registrar Prof Dr Kamrul Huda delivered the welcome speech on the function.
Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, former Chittagong city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Wasequa Aysha Khan, MP, former CU VC Prof AJM Nuruddin Chowdhury, CU pro-VC Prof Shirin Akhter, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) president Mahbubul Alam and former CU Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) vice president SM Fazlul Huq, among others, spoke.
Lawmakers, former ministers, secretaries of different ministries, educationists, local elites and CUCSU leaders, CU alumni working in different capacities of the government, deans of different faculties, chairmen of different departments and provosts of different halls of the university, among others, attended the function.
Nearly 35 thousand students including alumni of the university carrying colourful balloons, festoons and placards participated in the founding anniversary.
Different departments of the university also celebrated the day through cutting cakes and bringing out colourful rallies from their respective departments.
Today’s programmes also included discussion, reception to the freedom fighters and cultural function.
Located in picturesque Fatehpur union of Hathazari Upazila of the district, nearly 22 kilometers from Chittagong city, the CU came into being on November 18, 1966.
