Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres has expressed deep shock at the loss of lives in the deadly inferno that broke out in Chawkbazar area of Old Dhaka.
The Secretary General said this in a message sent to President Abdul Hamid on Saturday. “I would like to express my condolences to you, and to the Government and
people of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, for the loss of lives and
property due to the devastating Chawkbazar inferno in Dhaka on February 20,” he said.
The condolence message of the UN Secretary General was sent to President through the ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Masud Bin Momen.
In the message, the UN Secretary General wished a speedy
recovery of the injured and lauded the efforts undertaken by the national emergency services to respond to the fire and assist those in need.
Guterres assured the UN stands in solidarity and support at this critical time.
