Two killed in Sylhet stone quarry landslide

Two workers were killed and two others were injured in a landslide at a stone quarry in Sylhet on Monday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Sona Miah, 25, son of Anwar Hossain and Nurul Haque, 30, son of Wazid Ali, residents of Dakkhin Sunamganj upazila in Sunamganj, the police said.
Local people said that the landslide took place at a quarry of Shah Arefin Tila, a hillock of Companiganj upazila in Sylhet at about 3:00pm, while a group of some 10 workers were extracting underground stones illegally from the quarry.
A huge chunk of earth collapse on the workers, leaving the deceased buried alive and two others injured, they said. Companiganj police investigation inspector Jasim Uddin told in the evening that they were trying to recover the bodies of the victims. In the last year, at least 42 people were killed and more than 60 were injured in different incidents of landslides at different stone quarries at Companiganj, Goainghat and Kanaighat upazilas in the district.
In another incident, at least 10 members of a taskforce of the local administration were injured at Bholaganj Stone Quarry in Companiganj, as a group of illegal stone traders launched an attack on them in the afternoon.
Companiganj upazila nirbahi officer Bijan Kumar Banerji told that a gang of illegal stone traders launched the attack on the taskforce at about 2:00pm while it was conducting a drive at the Bholaganj Stone Quarry, the country’s largest stone quarry, against illegal stone lifting.
The authorities concern would file a a case in this regard, he added.
