Two killed in city

A Dhaka University student was killed in the city’s Shaheenbag area and a alleged mugger at Khilgaon early Friday, police said.
The Dhaka University (DU) student has been reportedly killed in a car accident. The deceased has been identified as Multam Sher Ashraf, 27, son of retired Justice AM Abdul Mannan Khan, resident of Uttara.
Quoting the relatives, Tejgaon Police Station’s Sub-Inspector (SI) Sarder Nizamul Haque said that Ashraf was in a car with his friend Jannati Hossain, a North South University (NSU) student, who was the driver. Suddenly the car rammed into a police van at
Mohakhali at around 1:00am Police sent the body to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital’s (DMCH) morgue for autopsy. Jannati was also injured in the accident, he said.
Police arrested Jannati with suspicion from her home after a case had been filed with the Tejgaon Thana in this connection.
In the second incident, an alleged mugger was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with a special team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) at Khilgaon in the capital around 3:00am.
Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (media) of DMP confirmed the news and said that DB members were patrolling the Khilgaon Bishwa Road on information that an organized gang of criminals had been committing mugging there regularly at midnight.
Following suspicious movements of several young men in the area, the DB men challenged them near Khilgaon Khidma Hospital After being challenged, the group started firing into the officials, forcing the detectives to fire back. The ensuing gunfight left one of the muggerseriously injured, aged about 35, with bullet injuries, the DB official added.
 He said that the injured was rushed to the DMCH and duty doctors declared him dead around 4:00am, he said.
