Two killed, 100 injured in Habiganj clash

At least two persons including a woman were killed and more than 100 including three policemen injured in a clash between people of three villages at Lakhai upazila of the district on Wednesday afternoon.
Police fired 30 rounds of rubber bullets and 120 rounds of tear-shell to control the situation.
The deceased were identified as Hadisa Begum, 55, wife of Modhu Mia, and Rofiq Mia, 50, of Ashera village in the upazila.
Police said like each year the Korab Mela (a village fair) was arranged at Lakhai upazila. People of two groups tried to set up housie board at the fair, but police barred them. As police arrested one bettor his companions tried to snatch him away, while bettors of the two sides engaged in altercation. At one stage, people of Korab, Ashera, and Fandrail villages locked in violent clash leaving Hadisa Begum, who had set up a betel leaf shop at the fair, dead on the spot, and more than hundred others injured.
Of them, policemen Sajib, 25, Hasan Mia, 24, and Masud Rana, 25, have been admitted to Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital for treatment. On the other hand, Abdal Mia, 27, Shish Ali, 90, Yusuf Mia, 80, Barkat Ullah, 50, Askir Mia, 40, Shaheen Mia, 25, Rahmat Ullah, 50, Raofiq Mia, were admitted to the same hospital. But since Rofiq Mia’s condition was deteriorating, he was being rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital but died on the way.
