Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Shafiqul Islam today stressed the need for setting up traffic police boxes and citizen service centres in unused areas under flyovers in Dhaka to ease the sufferings of traffic policemen and ensure shelter for them.
Traffic police are the first to respond to any kind of accident or crime on the road and they take necessary steps to send the victim to the hospital along with providing first aid, he said while inaugurating a traffic police box and citizen service centre in the capital’s Shantinagar intersection.
“But they have no place to take shelter during storms. They (traffic police) also suffer from various diseases including kidney disease as they do not have access to toilets while working,” the DMP chief said.
Considering these aspects, such traffic police boxes and civic service centres can be set up in unused places under flyovers in consultation with the city corporation, he said.
Such traffic police boxes will have first aid box, fire extinguisher, stretcher, potable water and other equipments as they will also function as citizen service centres.
Some 19 other police boxes will be set up in different intersections in the division in phases with an aim to help city dwellers.
