Tourist police for increasing strength threefold

The newly organized tourist police needed at least three times more strength to give foolproof security to both foreign and local travelers at the country’s all tourists’ spots.
The observation came at a consultation meeting with the stakeholders and concerned officials of the specialized police force that has recently expanded its operation to different tourists’ spots.
“Presently, we have introduced tourist security coverage to Dhaka, Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Teknaf, Kuakata, Sylhet and Moulovibazar. After getting reinforcement we will be able to expand our operation to the Sundarbans and Mohasthangar and Paharpur,” DIG Tourist Police Md Sohrab Hossain said at the meeting at his office here on Tuesday.
Presently, 520 officers and personnel, out of 703 sanctioned positions for tourist police, are being deployed at different tourist spots of the country except the Sundarbans and Bogra.
A proposal with expanded organogram has been forwarded to the Police Headquarters suggesting for increasing its manpower to 1711 for covering the entire country.
DIG Hossain said the code of conduct of tourist police is being formulated with consultation of the law ministry.
“After finalizing the code of conduct, we will be able to enforce law with full authority like realizing fines and filing cases,” he said.
He said they are ready to provide security to any sort of tourists.
“During the last political turmoil, we have provided security to some foreign tourists. If any tour operator applies we will give escort to their foreign tourists during hartal or political turmoil,” he said. DIG Police said different kinds of training have been imparted to the tourist police to make them tourist friendly.
Additional DIG of Chittagong Zone Md Muslim and Superintended of Police (Planning an Operation) Sarder Nurul Amin also spoke on the occasion.
Representatives from different tourism related organizations including Tour operator Association of Bangladesh (TOAB), Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (ATAB), PATA Bangladesh Chapter and Aviation and Tourism Developers Association of Bangladesh (TDAB), Tourism Resort Industries Association of Bangladesh (TRIAB) Tourism Journalists’ Forum of Bangladesh (ATJFB) took part in the discussion.
Prioritising tourism sector the present government introduced the tourist police recently under the umbrella of Bangladesh Police to ensure security and safety of tourists and also to protect the environmental and ecological sustainability.
