Hartal, blockade programmes: Tourism suffers setback in Sylhet, Kuakata

The tourism sector of the country, especially in Sylhet zone is passing critical times due to hartal and blockade programmes called by BNP and its allies. As a result this buzzing sector is facing serious financial losses.
Jointapur, Jaflong, Madhobkundo, Malonichhora, Lubachhora, Bhulagonj, Ratargul was abuzz with the presence of numerous tourists, who came to visit during the recent Christmas, new-year celebrations and weekly holidays. But in the last several days, the main tourist destination is experiencing an acute scarcity of tourists due to political programmes, particularly hartal and blockade called by BNP and its allies.
President of Sylhet Hotel-Motel, Guest House Owners’ Association Md. Shipar Ahmed said, there are one hundred hotels and motels in Sylhet. Seventy per cent of the hotels and motels remained vacant in the recent days. As a result, the owners of the hotels and motels are incurring huge losses.
He also said, their hotels are faced with the problems of scarcity of guests. The government-run hotels and motels under Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation are also incurring losses, he further said.
Excelsior Sylhet Hotel and Resort authority said there was no movement of all kinds of transports to and from the town due to blockade. They have incurred losses of about Taka six lakh in the last several days.
