Chinese restaurant on illegal gas line: Titas disconnects line

A Chinese restaurant was running for 12 years with illegal gas connection from Basabo Buddhist temple, hampered government revenue of approximately Tk 25 lakh annually, finally disconnected on Tuesday.
The Broccolli Chinese restaurant, situated beside the Buddha temple, in Basabo in the capital used four gas burners from morning to late night without any permission from Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company.
Titas officials said that the restaurant used the gas connection which was taken by the Basabo Buddha temple for using in the name of Buddha Kristy Parishad for residential use.
A five member Titas mobile team led by Engineer Sujat Ali, Deputy General Manager of the company’s vigilance unit, disconnected the illegal line in a drive after facing acute hindrance from its owner Sukomol Barua and the workers of the restaurant.
The restaurant men firstly create huge obstruction while the team tried to enter it. The workers tried to close the door of the kitchen of the restaurant. But the team members, however, entered the kitchen after about one hour efforts and disconnected the illegal line and evacuated its meter and regulator.
Officials said that a section of dishonest employees

of the Titas also were involved behind the illegal using of the gas line in the restaurant. Titas gas officials said that the company suffering from loss of about Tk 800 crore for the illegal connections annually.
They said illegally connections are posing serious risk of fatal accidents.
Recently, such an accident has taken place in Narayangonj which killed about 34 innocent people.
Illegal gas connection was behind the massive accident. The authority started strong efforts to disconnect all illegal connections aftermath the Narayangojn incident.
